Have you ever said something with the best intentions, only to find yourself removing your foot from your mouth?
Words are wonderful things. They can give life, just as they did when God spoke the world into existence (Genesis 1).
John 1:4
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
But we can also find ourselves saying the right thing the wrong way or at the wrong time. Scripture even reminds us to be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:9). We have to choose the words we use.
Today, set aside time to seek God and be in his presence. Listen to what God is trying to teach you about your words. Then respond to the following questions and reflect on how you can take a step toward using words that are helpful and healthful.
Discussion Questions:
Ice breaker: Have you taken the color test for communicating? If so, what was your color? If not, which one resonated with you when described in the message?
Why is communication so complicated?
Read Ephesians 4:29. What challenges you about this verse? What encourages you?
What is something you learned this weekend that challenged you?
What is one thing you will do to choose helpful and healthful words this week?
Prayer:
Jesus, you are the Word, and throughout Scripture I see how your words bring life. Today, guide my speech. Give me wisdom and insight to choose words that will lift others up. Help me use words that bring life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Series Theme Verse:
Proverbs 18:21
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”
