New Testament Reading Plan: Romans 13
I am sure you have heard the popular old adage, “if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” It's a great reminder to choose our words carefully.
The importance of words is seen all throughout Scripture. God calls on each of us to use kind words to lift each other up, always telling the truth and avoiding the spread of negativity. We must glorify God through our words, because the way we speak is reflective of our hearts.
We have all experienced a time when words stuck with us—both positively and negatively. Maybe someone gave you a compliment that made a bad day a lot better. Positive words are a little glimpse of light and hope to others who may be struggling to see any light in their lives. As someone who has struggled with depression, I have experienced firsthand the impact that good and helpful language can have on a brother or sister in Christ who may be struggling.
On the other hand, maybe someone used their words as weapons to wound you, such as spreading gossip or slandering or simply speaking negatively. Unfortunately, at some point, you and I will also probably find ourselves being the person who wields the “weapon.”
We will inevitably experience trials in our lives that make it difficult to remain positive and speak life. However, we must remember that our words have an eternal impact, so we should strive to use words that are helpful and healthful.
Ephesians 4:29
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
Jesus was a great example to us on how we should speak to each other in every interaction. He communicated God’s love and faithfulness, even to people he disagreed with. Just as his words gave life to others, our words can be life-giving when we intentionally decide to use them to bring light to the world.
Words are a really powerful tool, but they are a double-edged sword—they can be used for good or for evil. The choice is up to us. As followers of Christ, let’s choose our words intentionally and glorify God in everything we say.
