Speaker:

Ben Snyder, Lead Pastor

Theme Verse:

John 14:26, "But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you."

Fazed: Surprised, disturbed, perturbed

4 Ways of Being Fazed:

  • 😑 Avoidance - we try to ignore or escape all chaos
  • 😤 Aggression - we strive to overcome all chaos
  • 😳 Anxiousness - we attempt to solve all the "what if" chaos
  • 😣 Depression - we feel defeated by the chaos

Key: Try to notice your reactions this week.

How does God "UNFAZE" us?

Ephesians 5:15-20 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, butunderstand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

Bottom Line:

GOD’S SPIRIT keeps us STEADY

Begin by learning WHO he is and WHAT he does.

John 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. 17 The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

No Jesus = No Spirit

Know Jesus = Know the Spirit

John 14:26-27 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. 27 I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

This week:

Pay attention to your reactions and to the presence of God’s Spirit.

Light a candle as a physical act to remember that God’s light and presence are always available to those who follow him.

Discussion Questions:

  • Icebreaker: How would you rate your peacefulness?
  • What steals people’s peacefulness and leaves them feeling fazed? What do they try to fill themselves with in search of peace?
  • What stands out to you when you read Romans 8:6 and John 14:26-27?
  • How do you try to live by your own power? What would it look like for you to trust and live in the power of the Holy Spirit?
  • What is one thing you can do this week to take a practical step of awareness toward the presence of God’s Holy Spirit?
