Have you been wanting to study the Bible more but aren’t quite sure where to begin?
The SOAP Bible study method is an excellent way to dig into Scripture, whether you are newer to studying the Bible or more seasoned. It works effectively regardless of whether you explore the Old or New Testament and all you need is a Bible and a place to jot some notes.
Before you begin, take just a few moments to quiet your mind and invite God into this time. Ask him to show you something new he wants you to learn.
Let’s take a close look at what the letters in the acronym SOAP stand for.
S - Scripture - choose a passage of scripture to read. Often people will read a full chapter, but if its longer or you’re running short on time, you could read a smaller block of text. Read slowly and carefully, being aware of what you read. If a particular verse jumps out at you, that is a great thing to copy into your journal.
O -Observations - Capture what stood out to you in your journal. Was there a particular verse or something you learned? Write it down. Did you learn something that helped you know God better, encouraged you, or made you realize something?
A - Application - Now that you have this information, what does it mean to you and how will you apply it? This is the time to ponder how you will live out what you read in Scripture. God’s Word is meant to be read, of course but even more importantly and applied. Application is all about living it out.
P - Prayer: This is your opportunity to confess where you fall short and express the desire to be conformed more and more into God’s image. It's a great time to ask God to help you apply what you observed or learned.
By methodically and consistently SOAPING your way through Scripture, you will gain a richer understanding of God and his redemptive plan for the world, accelerate the process of being conformed into his image, and begin to live out your faith which will be a light to others beckoning them to Christ.
Grab something to journal with and a Bible and begin today!
