If I had to describe the past month in one word, I’d probably say **busy**. But honestly, it’s been the kind of busy that I’m incredibly thankful for.
Between concerts, sporting events, church, my internship, and just life in general, it feels like the past month has flown by. There have been some incredible highs, a few disappointing moments, and a whole lot of memories that I know I’ll look back on for a long time.
One of the biggest highlights of the month was getting to see Rush live.
I’ve loved Rush for a long time, so finally getting the opportunity to see them in concert was something I had been looking forward to for a long while. And somehow, it still exceeded my expectations.
It’s hard to put into words what it was like to actually be there. Hearing those songs that I’ve listened to for years being played live was something completely different. There are concerts that are fun, and then there are concerts that you know you’re going to remember for the rest of your life. Rush was definitely the latter.
I walked out of that concert thinking, That might honestly be the greatest concert I’ve ever been to.
And then, because apparently one incredible concert wasn’t enough, I also got to see the Foo Fighters.
That show was equally amazing in a completely different way. The energy , the music — everything about it was incredible. I’ve always loved music, and getting to experience two legendary bands like Rush and Foo Fighters within the same month was pretty special.
As someone who has played bass for years, getting to watch musicians like Nate Mendel Of Foo fighter and Getty Lee of Rush is something I never take for granted. There’s something different about seeing music you love performed right in front of you.
Detroit Sports Have Kept Me Busy
Of course, I couldn’t make it through a month without going to some games.
I’ve gotten to see a bunch of Detroit sports, including the Tigers, a Red Wings preseason and a Lions pre season game. Being able to spend time at these games has been another huge part of the month.
There’s just something about being at a live sporting event that you can’t replicate anywhere else. frustration, happiness and all sorts of emotions.
Unfortunately, the Tigers gave me plenty of that frustration.
As I’m writing this, today is the final game of the regular season, and the Tigers are officially out of playoff contention.
And man... that stinks.
Being a Tigers fan means I am way too familiar with the phrase:
“Wait till next year.”
I feel like I’ve heard it more times than I can count.
But despite the disappointment, I’m already finding myself missing baseball. There’s something about having baseball on almost every night that becomes part of your routine. Even when the season doesn't end the way you hoped, you still miss it when it’s gone.
And yesterday was especially significant because I got to see Justin Verlander play his final game, closing out an incredible 21-year career. His first start was the month after I was born to put that into perspective.
Watching the end of a career like that was pretty surreal. Verlander has been a part of baseball for so long that it’s strange to think about baseball without him in it. Getting to witness the final chapter of a 21-year career in person was something I’m really glad I got to experience.
Church Has Been a Big Part of This Month Too
As crazy as the concerts and sports have been, probably the biggest area of growth for me this month has actually been church.
When I first started my internship and took on more responsibility, there were definitely moments when everything felt like a lot. There were new responsibilities, new people, new situations, and a lot to learn.
But lately, I’ve started to notice something:
It’s becoming more manageable.
I’m learning how things work. I’m becoming more comfortable with my responsibilities. I’m learning how to communicate better, how to lead, how to serve people, and how to handle situations when things don't go exactly according to plan.
I’ve also gotten to experience some pretty meaningful moments through the church. Whether it’s serving on the Dream Team, working with the First Impressions team, helping with baptisms, leading young adults, or simply having conversations with people, I’m realizing more and more that ministry is really about people.
It isn’t always about having the perfect plan.
Sometimes it’s just about showing up, listening to someone, encouraging them, praying with them, or being there when they need somebody.
And I think I’m finally starting to understand that.
Looking Back
When I look back at this past month, it’s kind of crazy to think about everything that has happened.
I got to see Rush — probably the greatest concert I’ve ever been to.
I got to see the Foo Fighters put on an incredible show.
I got to go to Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, and other games.
I watched the Tigers' season come to an unfortunate end.
I watched Justin Verlander close out an incredible 21-year career.
And at the same time, I’ve continued growing in my faith and learning more about what it means to serve people through the church.
It’s been a busy month, but it’s also been a really good one.
There are definitely things I wish had gone differently — especially when it comes to the Tigers — but I’m trying to appreciate the experiences for what they were.
Because someday, I’ll probably look back on this month and realize just how special it actually was.
For now, though, I guess I’ll say what every Tigers fan knows all too well:
Wait till next year.
And honestly...
I already miss baseball.
