God, help me recognize what is truly worth following and give me the courage to follow you above everything else.Scripture 

Matthew 7:29 

“For he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.” 

Now, read Matthew 7:28–29. 

Everyone follows someone. Not always in an obvious way, but in the choices we make, the values we adopt, and the direction we go. 

We follow voices that we believe have authority—people we respect, admire, or want to be like. Sometimes that’s a coach, a friend group, a relationship, or even culture itself. And sometimes, we follow just because we don’t want to be alone. But not all authority is worth following. 

Jesus stood out because His authority was different. It wasn’t based on popularity, control, or status. It came from who He is—and it was backed by how He lived.  

Every word He spoke and every action He took matched perfectly. There was no gap between what He said and what He did. His authority was rooted in truth, and His life proved it. That’s what makes Him worth following. 

There are a lot of voices competing for your trust. Some will lead you toward things that look good in the moment but don’t hold up over time. Others will promise acceptance or identity but fall short when it matters most. But Jesus is different. 

His authority isn’t temporary. It doesn’t shift or change based on culture or opinion. It is steady, true, and proven. So the question isn’t if you’re following something—you already are. The question is: Is what you’re following actually worth it? 

Question: When you look at your life right now, whose authority are you actually following—and is it leading you somewhere good?
