How to Meet People in Toledo: CedarCreek's Groups & Gatherings

Church Community: Soarion Digital

Making friends as an adult is genuinely hard. Nobody talks about that enough. You don't have the built-in social infrastructure of school anymore, no shared classes, no dorms, no teams that keep you in the same room with the same people week after week until friendships form naturally. As an adult, you have to be intentional about it. And most of the options out there, bars, networking events, fitness classes, keep things frustratingly surface-level.

If you're in Toledo and trying to actually build real friendships, here's what we've found works.

Why Groups Work Better Than Events

The difference between an event and a group is consistency. An event gives you one shot to connect with people before everyone disperses and goes back to their lives. A group puts you in the same room with the same people, week after week, working through real topics and real life together. That repetition is what turns acquaintances into friends.

At CedarCreek, our groups are semester-based and meet regularly throughout Toledo and the surrounding area. They're built around shared life stages and interests — not generic "adults 18 and up" categories, but specific seasons of life like young professionals figuring out their careers, parents navigating the chaos of raising kids, people going through major transitions, or anyone who just wants honest community around questions of faith and purpose.

Some groups meet in homes. Some meet in coffee shops. Some meet entirely online. And you're actively encouraged to try a couple before settling on one — finding the right fit matters, and we'd rather you take the time to find it than commit to a group that isn't the right match.

No church membership required. No faith background necessary. Come as you are.

Serving: The Fastest Shortcut to Real Friendship

If groups are the long game, serving is the shortcut. There's something about working alongside someone toward something that matters that collapses the small talk and gets to the real stuff faster than almost anything else. You learn who people actually are when you're serving a nursing home resident together, or hauling boxes at a food distribution, or spending a Saturday painting at a women's shelter.

Second Saturday Serves happen monthly at our Toledo campuses — South Toledo at 2150 South Byrne Rd. and West Toledo at 2600 West Sylvania Ave. — and they're one of the most accessible entry points we have. No prior commitment, no long-term obligation. Show up once and see what happens.

For something more ongoing, the DreamTeam has volunteer roles across every area of church life — kids ministry, hospitality, production, outreach, and more. Over a hundred roles available, ranging from weekly to once a month. A lot of people who came to CedarCreek looking for community ended up finding it on a serving team, not in a group.

Weekend Services as a Starting Point

If you're not quite ready for a group or a serving commitment, attending a weekend service is a completely valid first step. Services at our Toledo campuses run about an hour — practical teaching, live music, free coffee, and a welcoming DreamTeam to help you find your footing. Nobody's going to single you out or ask you to commit to anything.

South Toledo meets Sundays at 9am and 11am. West Toledo meets Saturdays at 5pm and Sundays at 8:30am, 10am and 11:30am. Every service also streams live and on demand at watch.cedarcreek.tv if you want to get a feel for things before showing up in person.

GrowthTrack: When You're Ready to Go Deeper

Once you've found your footing, GrowthTrack is a natural next step. It's a free 4-week program that helps you discover your purpose and figure out exactly where you fit in the community, whether that's leading a group, joining a serving team, or something else you hadn't considered. A lot of people who came to CedarCreek to make friends left GrowthTrack with something bigger than that: a clearer sense of who they are and what they're supposed to do with it.

You Don't Have to Have It Together First

One more thing worth saying: you don't have to be in a good place to show up. You don't have to have your faith figured out, your life sorted, or your social anxiety under control. CedarCreek is full of people who showed up for the first time feeling exactly the way you might be feeling right now — uncertain, a little skeptical, not sure if this was going to be worth it. A lot of them found out it was.
